The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class will enter the market with comprehensive new features. Among the highlights is an all-new and highly efficient engine range with a series of new technologies for electrification of the powertrain. Intelligent Drive takes another step towards autonomous driving. And the undisputed leader in the premium segment with regard to comfort and wellness sets new standards in the interior.
No less than three completely new engines have their debut in the new S-Class: Diesel and petrol variants of 6-cylinder in-line engines and a new V8 biturbo petrol engine. In addition, Mercedes-Benz plans a plug-in hybrid with an electric range of about 50 kilometres. At the same time, ground-breaking technologies such as the 48 volt Integrated Starter Generator and the electric booster compressor celebrate their world première.
The top-of-the-range model of Mercedes-Benz takes another big step towards autonomous driving and elevates Intelligent Drive to the next level. Active Distance Control DISTRONIC and Active Steering Assist now provide even more comfortable support for the driver to keep a safe distance and steer. The speed is now adjusted automatically ahead of bends, junctions or roundabouts, for example (country-specific variations may occur in terms of the individual functions).
MULTIBEAM LED headlamps enable extremely quick and precise adjustment of the headlamps to the current traffic conditions. The ULTRA RANGE main beams produce the maximum light intensity permitted by law, which results in the brightness of the main beams remaining above the reference value of 1 lux over a distance of more than 650 metres. ROAD SURFACE SCAN for advance recognition of road bumps and the curve inclination function are further highlights of the new S-Class.
ENERGIZING comfort control is being launched onto the market as a world first from September 2017: this optional feature links various onboard comfort systems together, e.g. climate control, ambience lighting, massage and fragrancing functions, and allows customers to configure a specific wellness set-up to suit their mood or need. This enhances physical comfort and performance on the road.
The development work on the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class was extremely extensive, with 6,500 new components. "With a whole series of new features and functions, the S-Class remains the technological pioneer," says Ola Källenius, the member of the Daimler AG Board of Management responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development.
The flagship from Mercedes-Benz was the best-selling luxury saloon in the world in 2016. Since 2013 the company has sold well over 300,000 saloons. Today there are six different S-Class body variants.
Three torches of light as an exclusive exterior design feature
Modern luxury in the new S-Class is manifest in maximum quality of materials and workmanship. Status and technological competence are now even more tangible. All models are fitted with a new radiator grille: The versions with six and eight-cylinder engines sport three twin louvres in chrome as well as vertical bars in a high-gloss black finish in the radiator grille. The saloon with long wheelbase and V12 engine is fitted with additional chrome-finish vertical bars in the radiator grille.
The upgraded front with extensive chrome trim underscores the exceptional status of the Mercedes-Maybach. Also new is the Maybach logotype between the louvres of the radiator grille on the driver's side.
In conjunction with the new MULTIBEAM LED headlamps (optional feature, details below), the S-Class features three distinctive torches of light as an exclusive design element. The front bumper with pronounced air intakes and sporty looks is also new.
The new LED lamps with crystal-look tail lamps stand out at the rear. They look like jewels and ensure a characteristic design day and night. A tail lamp light show that plays when the vehicle is unlocked and locked, as well as three horizontal pairs of fibre optics are also new.
All models are fitted with a redesigned lower bumper section with integrated visible tailpipe trim. The tailpipes are framed by a chrome trim element, which spans the entire width of the vehicle. Seven new light-alloy wheels with diameters between 17 and 20 inches are available as standard or options.
Control and display concept with wide-screen cockpit and new generation of steering wheels
The interior of the new S-Class is characterised by the two new high-resolution displays, each with a screen diagonal of 12.3 inches. Visually, the two displays under one shared glass cover blend into a wide-screen cockpit and as a central element consequently emphasise the horizontal orientation of the interior design.
Like the instrument cluster, this wide-screen cockpit contains a large display with virtual instruments in the direct field of vision of the driver, as well as a central display above the centre console. Because the cockpit is fully digital, the driver can choose from three different display styles ("Classic", "Sporty" and "Progressive") and also configure the information and views relevant to them at will.
The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class has touch-sensitive Touch Control buttons in the steering wheel. They respond to swiping motions like the screen of a smartphone. They enable the driver to control the entire infotainment system without having to take their hands off the steering wheel.
The infotainment system can also be operated via the touchpad with controller in the centre console and by LINGUATRONIC voice control. Voice control has for the first time been extended to include vehicle functions. Voice commands can now also be used to control the air conditioning and seat heating/ventilation, interior lighting (ambience lighting, reading lights, lighting in the rear), fragrancing/ionisation, seat massage function and head-up display. Depending on language version and vehicle equipment, up to 450 individual voice commands are now possible. The operation of DISTRONIC and cruise control with control elements directly on the steering wheel is another new feature.
Authentic materials and meticulous detail design
High-quality materials define the interior of the S-Class. These include, for example, open-pore woods as well as leather-trimmed door linings and waistlines, depending on the equipment level. Another Mercedes hallmark clearly in evidence is the high-quality look and feel created through meticulous attention to detail and craftsmanship. The material and colour concept has also been carefully composed, and features a wide range of brown tones, including new colour combinations such as magma grey/espresso brown or mahogany brown/silk beige.
Lighting atmosphere with 64 colours
As before, the interior lighting uses only long-lasting, energy-saving LED technology. With 64 colours, the optional extended ambience lighting offers a wealth of individual settings. It adds lighting highlights, for example, on the trim elements, the central display, the stowage facility at the front of the centre console, the handle recesses, the door pockets, in the front and rear footwells, on the overhead control panel, and on the tweeters when the vehicle is equipped with the Burmester® High-End 3D surround sound system.
All Mercedes-Benz S-Class models are equipped with the KEYLESS-GO start function as standard. This also marks the introduction of the new attractive generation of keys, with a high-gloss black or high-gloss white design and different ornamental frames.
World first: Wellness while driving
ENERGIZING comfort control is being launched onto the market as a world first in September 2017: this optional feature links various comfort systems in the vehicle together. It systematically uses the functions of the climate control system (including fragrancing) and the seats (heater, ventilation, massage), the wall heating as well as lighting and musical atmospheres, and enables a specific wellness set-up tailored to the mood and need of the customer. As a result, well-being and performance levels are enhanced. ENERGIZING comfort can be experienced in all seats, depending on the equipment level.
These six programmes can be selected:
The programmes all run for ten minutes. They are visualised on the head unit with colour graphics, and backed by suitable music. Five songs are already stored in the programme. The key function in the "Vitality" programme, for example, is fast music with many beats per minute. The S-Class repertoire therefore features "Feelin' Good" by Leon Riskin, for instance. If personal music selections are available, e.g. via the Media Interface, the system analyses them in the background and assigns them to a programme based on the beats per minute. Individual functions of the programmes can be deactivated.
ENERGIZING comfort control also incorporates the ambience lighting, which is harmoniously tailored to each of the individual screen designs. The light stages the interior like a work of art by composing colour worlds from different colours.
The colour worlds can be temporarily replaced with special effects - for example, a special lighting atmosphere welcomes the driver. In addition, the climate control system indicates whether the temperature is adjusted up or down through the colour of the ambience lighting. The brightness of the LEDs adapts equally variably and can be set in five levels and four zones: wide-screen cockpit, area of front seats, rear compartment, and all. As a result, the ambience lighting harnesses the positive effects of light on well-being while on the road. This makes this equipment feature a key part of ENERGIZING comfort control with its tailor-made programmes.
In addition, the ambience lighting creates emotionally appealing contrasts and structures the interior into levels. 64 colours and ten colour worlds allow an avant-garde lighting display with spectacular colour changes.
Powertrain: new engines with landmark technology
Mercedes-Benz S 450 (combined fuel consumption: 6.6 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 150 g/km) and S 500 (combined fuel consumption: 6.6 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 150 g/km): The new, systematically electrified in-line six-cylinder comes to the starting line in two output levels. The S 450 (also as a 4MATIC model) develops 270 kW (367 hp) and 500 Nm of torque. The S 500 has an output of 320 kW (435 hp) and delivers 520 Nm. New, intelligent forced induction that includes an electric booster compressor as well as an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) provide outstanding power delivery without turbo lag. Over a short period, the beltless starter generator makes a further 250 Nm of torque and 16 kW of output available. Compared with the similarly powerful S 500 predecessor model with V8 engine, it has been possible to reduce the CO2 emissions of the engine by around 22 percent.
The significant power increase of the six-cylinder petrol engines to the level of the previous eight-cylinder units is also reflected in the model designations: The models with the new six-cylinder engines now therefore bear the designation S 450 or S 500.
Mercedes-Benz S 560 4MATIC (combined fuel consumption: 8.5 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 195 g/km) and Mercedes-Maybach S 560 4MATIC (combined fuel consumption: 9.3 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 209 g/km): The new V8 comes to the starting line with 345 kW (469 hp) and 700 Nm. The biturbo engine is among the most economical V8 petrol engines in the world, and consumes about ten percent less fuel than the eight-cylinder predecessor model. To lower the fuel consumption, four cylinders of the new V8 are deactivated simultaneously under partial load with the help of the CAMTRONIC valve-lift adjustment system. This reduces the pumping losses while improving the overall efficiency of the remaining four cylinders by shifting the operating point towards higher loads. The turbochargers positioned in the V of the cylinder banks represent another special feature.
Mercedes-Benz S 600 (combined fuel consumption: 11.6 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 270 g/km: The top-of-the-line Mercedes-Benz is the V12 with 390 kW (530 hp) and 830 Nm. The new twelve-cylinder engine in the Mercedes-Maybach S 650 delivers 463 kW (630 hp) and a maximum torque of 1000 Nm (combined fuel consumption: 12.7 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 289 g/km).
Mercedes-AMG S 63 4MATIC+ (combined fuel consumption: 8.9 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 203 g/km): For superior performance with significantly reduced fuel consumption, the AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine with cylinder deactivation replaces the previous 5.5-litre V8 biturbo. Despite a lower displacement, the new engine generates 450 kW (612 hp). The Mercedes-AMG S 65 is equipped with a twelve-cylinder engine developing 463 kW (630 hp) and 1000 Nm (combined fuel consumption: 11.9 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 279 g/km).
The most powerful diesel car in Mercedes-Benz history: In the Mercedes-Benz S 350 d 4MATIC (combined fuel consumption: 5.5 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions: 145 g/km) and S 400 d 4MATIC models (combined fuel consumption: 5.6 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions: 147 g/km), the new six-cylinder in-line diesel engine is being premiered in two output classes with 210 kW (286 hp) and 600 Nm and 250 kW (340 hp) and 700 Nm. Although the output has increased noticeably compared to the preceding model, the new engine consumes up to seven percent less fuel. The special traits of the top-of-the-line engine in the diesel family include the stepped-bowl combustion process, two-stage turbocharging and, for the first time, the use of CAMTRONIC variable valve-lift control. Its design features a combination of aluminium engine block and steel pistons as well as further improved NANOSLIDE® coating of the cylinder walls.
The new six-cylinder diesel engine is designed to comply with future emissions legislation (RDE - Real Driving Emissions). All the components of relevance for efficient emissions reduction are installed directly on the engine. The integrated technology approach combining the new stepped-bowl combustion process, dynamic multi-way exhaust-gas recirculation and near-engine exhaust-gas aftertreatment, for the first time combined with variable valve-lift control, makes further reduced consumption with low emissions possible. Thanks to the near-engine insulated configuration, exhaust-gas aftertreatment has low heat loss and extremely favourable operating conditions.
Intelligent Drive: the next step in driving assistance systems
The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class takes another major step towards autonomous driving, elevating Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive to the next level. The range of driving assistance and safety systems features a modular design and as standard includes Active Braking Assist, Crosswind Assist, ATTENTION ASSIST, Traffic Sign Assist and also the occupant protection system PRE-SAFE®. New and also part of the standard specification is PRE-SAFE® Sound (prepares human hearing for the anticipated accident noise when there is a risk of a collision).
Active Distance Control DISTRONIC and Active Steering Assist now provide even more comfortable support for the driver to keep a safe distance and steer. The speed is now adjusted automatically ahead of bends or junctions. This is complemented by a considerably improved Active Lane Changing Assist and additional functions of the Active Emergency Stop Assist (country-specific variations may occur in terms of the individual functions).
Thanks to enhanced camera and radar systems, the new S-Class has an even better view of the surrounding traffic: In addition, for the first time it makes use of map and navigation data to calculate driving behaviour.
This means that DISTRONIC Active Proximity Assist is able to assist the driver in many situations based on the route, and conveniently adjust the vehicle speed.
The "Assistance Graphics" menu of the instrument panel shows the driver at one glance which assistance functions he selected and to what situations the systems are currently responding. Unmistakable icons provide them with information on the screen as well in the head-up display. All functions are now controlled from the steering wheel. The new Driving Assistance package includes but is not limited to the following functions:
Ride quality: MAGIC BODY CONTROL improved and now with a curve inclination function
The S-Class made a technological statement of superiority in 2013 with ROAD SURFACE SCAN. The system recognises road bumps in advance and compensates them. In the new S-Class this suspension control is further improved: The system's new stereo camera has a much better performance and works at speeds up to 180 km/h. The S-Class Saloon's curve inclination function is another comfort enhancement. The body tilts to the inside of the bend by up to 2.65 degrees, thereby reducing the lateral forces acting on the passengers.
Long-distance vision: MULTIBEAM LED headlamps with ULTRA RANGE main beams
In 2013, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class became the first automobile to use exclusively LEDs as light sources. On request, the optional MULTIBEAM LED headlamps are available with ULTRA RANGE high beams. The ULTRA RANGE main beams produce the maximum light intensity permitted by law, which results in the brightness of the main beams remaining above the reference value of 1 lux over a distance of more than 650 metres. For the driver, this means a clear improvement of the already very good lighting performance of current MULTIBEAM LED systems.
Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus is part of the optional MULTIBEAM LED. It allows drivers to drive with activated main beams permanently without dazzling other road users. When there are oncoming vehicles or vehicles in front, the LEDs of the MULTIBEAM LED main beam modules are partially switched off, masking out a U-shaped area of the light beam. The other areas of the road continue to be illuminated with the high beam (partial high beam).
Wireless charging of smartphones and new Concierge Service
The new infotainment generation also expands the telephony options: With the help of Near Field Communication, the smartphone transforms into the digital vehicle key and the controller for parking (see above).
Mobile phones can be charged as standard, wirelessly and without a telephone holder. In addition, Multifunction Telephony (optional feature) allows connecting mobile phones with the vehicle's exterior aerial. Wireless charging works with all mobile devices that support or can be retrofitted to support the Qi standard. The charging pad is integrated into the stowage compartment at the front of the centre console. Wireless charging is optionally also available in the centre console in the rear.
The "Business Telephony in the Rear" equipment feature was expanded with additional functions such as connecting a second mobile phone and transferring calls between front and rear passengers. The Bluetooth® handset was also redesigned.
Front and rear passengers now have more text messaging options. They can now receive, send, forward and use voice-to-text to dictate text messages. Telephone numbers from text messages and embedded URLs can be used for further actions. The messages are also displayed as pop-ups on the right half of the wide-screen cockpit. Another new feature is the notification by text message if the vehicle is involved in a fender bender. The sensors of the vehicle detect such a situation and trigger a text message being sent to a preset mobile number.
The Burmester® High-End 3D Surround Sound system with a system output of 1520 watts was expanded with a speaker in the overhead control panel and two speakers in the sides.
The new Concierge Service puts a host of individual services at the disposal of Mercedes me connect customers: from making restaurant reservations and obtaining tips about tourist routes, to gathering information on cultural or sporting events and sending navigation destinations directly to the vehicle. Registered users can establish a telephone connection to the Concierge Service in the preset language in 20 countries throughout Europe by pressing the 'Info' button on the overhead control panel or via the Mercedes me App. The personal concierge takes care of everything else.
Driving assistance systems: the next step: Automated driving functions and exemplary safety
The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class takes another major step towards autonomous driving, elevating Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive to the next level. Within the system's limits, Active Distance Control DISTRONIC and Active Steering Assist now support the driver even more conveniently in keeping a safe distance and steering, and the vehicle speed is now also automatically adjusted on bends and at road junctions. Also on board are Active Emergency Stop Assist and a considerably improved Active Lane Changing Assist.
The new S-Class has an even better view of the traffic situation: improved camera and radar systems will allow it to see up to 250 m ahead in future. It also makes substantially greater use of map and navigation data. This means that DISTRONIC Active Proximity Assist is able to assist the driver in many situations based on the route, and conveniently adjust the vehicle speed.
The driver is also able to see at a glance which assistance functions have been selected, and to which situations the systems are reacting at present. Clearly understood icons - e.g. a steering wheel with hands on both sides - give information both on the screen and in the head-up display. All functions are now controlled from the steering wheel.
Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC: the speed preset in DISTRONIC is predictively reduced according to the route ahead of bends, junctions, roundabouts or toll booths, then increased back up. If the route has been selected using the navigation system, the Sâ€'Class also responds accordingly: if the car is in the slow lane, it is decelerated when approaching the desired motorway exit. The same applies to junctions where the navigation route prescribes a turn-off or ahead of which the driver activates the turn indicator.
The reduction in speed is in varying degrees, depending on the selected transmission mode (ECO, COMFORT or SPORT). In ECO mode, the cornering speed is configured to harmonise with Active Steer Assist. This means that automated driving for longer periods is also a reality on country roads. On highways and motorways, Active Distance Control DISTRONIC controls the distance from the vehicle ahead within a speed range from 0 to 210 km/h, and keeps the car on track.
Coasting characteristics, e.g. on downhill gradients, can now also be taken into account. In the interests of smooth and efficient driving, the speed is reduced in good time. If the vehicle is equipped with a drive system suitable for "gliding" (coasting with the engine off), this mode is automatically activated when the ECO transmission mode is active.
Active Lane Changing Assist: When the driver wishes to change lanes on multi-lane roads (recognised by the navigation system) at speeds from 80 to 180 km/h, it is now sufficient to nudge the indicator stalk. Within the next ten seconds, the sensor system checks together with the driver whether the next lane is clear in front of, alongside and behind the vehicle, also taking into account the speed of any other vehicles. When there is no other vehicle within the relevant safety zone, the driver is supported in changing lane. The initiated lane change is indicated in the instrument cluster and on the head-up display. The system is available in certain countries depending on certifiability.
Active Speed Limit Assist: In conjunction with COMAND Online, Active Speed Limit Assist - an engageable subfunction of Traffic Sign Assist - is also able to recognise sign gantries and road works signs. Known limits, such as 50 km/h in built-up areas or 100 km/h on country roads, are also adopted from the navigation system. Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC adapts the vehicle's speed to the recognised speed limits automatically. In certain cases, the speed can be adapted in anticipatory mode on the basis of map data. On roads without speed limits, such as certain stretches on German motorways, the recommended speed - in this case 130 km/h - is adopted as the set speed. This speed can be adjusted by the driver. The desired maximum speed is always adopted in the course of the journey when the speed limit is lifted. It remains preset until the vehicle leaves the motorway or until the engine is switched off.
Following vehicles in a tailback: in stop-and-go traffic on motorways and similar roads, stops of up to 30 seconds are now possible, within which the S-Class automatically moves off and follows the traffic ahead.
Active Emergency Stop Assist: Active Emergency Stop Assist brakes the vehicle to a standstill in its lane if it detects that the driver is no longer actively driving the vehicle while it is on the move with Active Steering Assist switched on. If there is no steering wheel movement over a predefined period, the system gives the driver a visual and audible prompt to place his or her hands on the wheel. If the driver fails to respond after repeated visual and audible prompts by moving the steering wheel, accelerating, braking or pressing a Touch Control button on the steering wheel, the car will be slowed down in the identified lane until it comes to a standstill. At speeds below approx. 60 km/h the following traffic is warned by means of hazard warning lamps. When the vehicle comes to a standstill, the parking brake is engaged automatically and the Mercedes-Benz emergency call system is activated. The vehicle is also unlocked, to allow first responders access to the interior. The functions are aborted as soon as the driver takes control of the vehicle again.
Active Braking Assist: Active Braking Assist with cross-traffic function is able to help the driver avoid impending collisions with vehicles ahead, stationary or crossing vehicles and with people if the driver fails to take any action to defuse the dangerous situation. This assistance takes the form of
Evasive Steering Assist: Evasive Steering Assist can support the driver in taking evasive action when pedestrians are detected in the danger zone in front of the vehicle and the driver initiates such action. The system then applies additional steering torque in the direction in which the driver is performing an evasive manoeuvre. This helps the driver to evade the pedestrian in a controlled manner and to stabilise the vehicle on its evasive course.
Active Lane Keeping Assist: This system is able to warn the driver by means of pulsed vibrations at the steering wheel when the vehicle is unintentionally drifting out of its lane at speeds between 60 and 200 km/h. If the vehicle passes over a continuous line, it can pull the vehicle back into lane by applying the brakes on one side. In the case of a broken line, such intervention takes place only when there is a danger of collision with a vehicle in the next lane (including danger from oncoming traffic).
Active Blind Spot Assist: In the speed range from approx. 10 to 200 km/h, this system is able to provide the driver with a visual alert plus an audible alarm when a turn indicator is actuated, to warn of a danger of side collisions with other vehicles, including e.g. bicycles. At speeds above 30 km/h, automatic braking on one side of the vehicle can additionally be applied to help avoid a side collision at the last moment.
Traffic Sign Assist: Image recognition and information from the digital road map in the navigation system allow the permitted maximum speed and any restrictions on overtaking for the current route section and zebra crossings to be computed and shown in the instrument cluster. Additional restrictions such as speed limits in wet conditions (warning when the windscreen wipers are switched on) or speed limits for trucks only are also taken into account or ignored as appropriate in the individual case concerned. The vehicle speed is compared with the speed limit. If set to do so by the driver, a visual/visual-acoustic warning is given if the speed limit is exceeded. No-entry signs are also recognised and the driver is prompted to check the vehicle's direction of travel. A warning additionally appears in the instrument cluster and on the head-up display when persons are detected in the area of zebra crossings.
Car-to-X Communication: Information concerning hazardous situations which a vehicle on the road has detected is made available to all other Car-to-X users to give drivers an early warning. As with Live Traffic Information, reports transmitted by Car-to-X are shown on the COMAND Online map display. Depending on the situation, a warning by voice output can be given when approaching a hazard.
Active Parking Assist: Active Parking Assist with reversing camera supports the driver in searching for a parking space and when entering or leaving parallel or end-on parking spaces. In the case of end-on parking spaces it is active in both forward and reverse direction. It manoeuvres the vehicle into the selected parking space and out again. In addition to operation of the accelerator and brake, changing gear is also carried out automatically. In conjunction with Blind Spot Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert can warn the driver of cross traffic when reversing out of end-on parking spaces and can also initiate automatic braking if necessary. In the case of Active Parking Assist with 360° camera, all-round vision is made possible by the reversing camera and three additional cameras. The information is presented clearly in full HD in a choice of different views on the central display.
Remote Parking Assist: Remote Parking Assist enables the driver to manoeuvre the vehicle into tight parking spaces or garages by smartphone, so as to facilitate entering and alighting from the vehicle. The vehicle can be manoeuvred into parallel and end-on parking spaces in both forward and reverse direction. Manoeuvring out of end-on parking spaces is also possible, e.g. if the driver returns to their vehicle to find that it has been blocked in. In Explore mode the vehicle can be manoeuvred straight forward or in reverse out of narrow garages, for example, by up to fifteen metres, avoiding detected obstacles. In narrow passageways, following confirmation by the driver, the vehicle is able to fold in the exterior mirrors so that it can approach the detected obstacle more closely (e.g. narrow garage entrance).
Choice of modular packages
The range of driving assistance systems is modular in structure: as standard equipment the S-Class features Active Braking Assist, Crosswind Assist, ATTENTION ASSIST and COMAND Online with Traffic Sign Assist and Car-to-X communication.
The components of the optional Driving Assistance Package are Active Distance Control DISTRONIC, Active Steering Assist, Active Speed Limit Assist, Active Braking Assist with cross-traffic function, Evasive Steering Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, route-based speed adaptation and PRE-SAFE® PLUS (also takes into account hazardous situations caused by following traffic, e.g. a rear-end collision).
Also available on request are the Parking package with reversing camera, the Parking package with 360° camera and the Remote Parking package. The driver can therefore decide which parking procedure is most convenient: supported from the driver's seat by the 360° camera and assisted manoeuvring of the Active Parking Assist (accelerator, brake, steering, gear changes) or as an additional option from outside the vehicle with the aid of Remote Parking Assist.
Control and display concept: Easy operation, numerous possibilities
Touch Control buttons on the steering wheel, touchpad, direct access keys or voice input: the control concept of the S-Class offers a variety of options. Drivers are able to choose the control method they prefer, which enhances both comfort and safety.
The interior of the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class is characterised by the two new high-resolution displays, each with a screen diagonal of 12.3 inches. The two displays visually blend into a wide-screen cockpit beneath a shared glass cover.
The new S-Class has touch-sensitive Touch Control buttons in the steering wheel. They respond to swiping motions like the screen of a smartphone. They enable the driver to control the entire infotainment system without having to take their hands off the steering wheel. The operation of DISTRONIC and cruise control with control elements directly on the steering wheel is another new feature.
Numerous functions can also be operated using the touchpad with controller in the centre console. A touch-sensitive telephone keypad is integrated into the touchpad. Thanks to haptic impulses and audible feedback from the onboard speakers, the driver can use the touchpad without taking their eyes off the road. The input options are rounded off by direct access keys for frequent control operations in front of the rotary pushbutton, and by the control array for the driving assistance systems to the left of the steering wheel.
Using the remote control, the functions of the infotainment systems COMAND Online can also be conveniently controlled from the rear. This relieves the workload of the driver, who can concentrate fully on the traffic.
LINGUATRONIC voice control has for the first time been extended to include vehicle functions. Voice commands can now also be used to control the air conditioning and seat heating/ventilation, interior lighting (ambience lighting, reading lights, lighting in the rear), fragrancing/ionisation, seat massage function and head-up display (see also chapter on infotainment system).
With the head-up display, the driver has all the important information to hand without taking their eyes off the road. The head-up display projects a virtual image measuring around 21 x 7 cm into the driver's field of vision. In the driver's perception, it appears to float above the bonnet around two metres in front. The image is high-resolution and in colour. Depending on the equipment level, it shows e.g. navigation instructions, vehicle speed, speed limits or the settings for cruise control or Active Distance Control DISTRONIC. A special light sensor adjusts the brightness of the display to the ambient light conditions. This ensures good legibility even on sunny days or at night. The height of the image can be varied to suit drivers of any size. The height setting is stored in combination with the memory function for the seats. The display content and brightness can also be selected individually.
The Smartphone Integration package with Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto integrates the smartphone into the vehicle's control and display concept.
In the wireless charging system for smartphones (see also chapter on infotainment system), they are connected by NFC (Near Field Communication) when the NFC logo (touchpoint) is touched.
With the 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission, manual gear shifts are possible using the DIRECT SELECT steering wheel shift paddles.
All Mercedes-Benz S-Class models are equipped with the KEYLESS-GO start function as standard. The engine can be switched on and off simply by pressing the KEYLESS start/stop button while simultaneously applying the brake pedal. The KEYLESS-GO package is a convenient access system where the driver only needs to carry the electronic key on their person. All the doors can be unlocked and locked by touching the door handle, without having to hold the key. In addition, the convenience function HANDS-FREE ACCESS allows hands-off, fully automatic opening and closing of the boot lid by performing a kicking movement under the rear bumper. This is particularly useful if e.g. coming from a shopping trip with hands full when the key is in one's pocket. Another advantage of the KEYLESS-GO package is the handle recess illumination. This makes the door handles immediately recognisable in poor lighting conditions.
Powertrain: New engines with trailblazing technology and efficiency
No less than three completely new engines have their debut in the new S-Class: Diesel and petrol variants of 6-cylinder in-line engines and a new V8 biturbo petrol engine. At the same time, ground-breaking technologies such as the Integrated Starter Generator and the electric booster compressor celebrate their world première. In addition, Mercedes-Benz plans a plug-in hybrid with an electric range of about 50 kilometres.
The new, systematically electrified in-line six-cylinder comes to the starting line in two output levels. In the Mercedes-Benz S 450 (also as a 4MATIC model) it generates 270 kW (367 hp) and 500 Nm of torque. (combined fuel consumption: 6.6 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 150 g/km). The S 500 has an output of 320 kW (435 hp) and 520 Nm (combined fuel consumption: 6.6 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 150 g/km). Over a short period, the Integrated Starter Generator makes a further 250 Nm of torque and 16 kW of output available. Compared to the similarly powerful S 500 predecessor with a V8 engine, it has been possible to reduce the CO2 emissions of the engine by around 22 percent.
New, intelligent forced induction that includes an electric booster compressor as well as an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) provide outstanding power delivery without turbo lag. The ISG is responsible for hybrid functions such as boost or energy recuperation, while allowing fuel savings that were previously reserved for high-voltage hybrid technology. Below the line, the new in-line 6-cylinder engine delivers the performance of an eight-cylinder with significantly lower consumption.
Systematic electrification dispenses with the need for a belt drive for ancillary components at the front of the engine, which reduces its overall length. The slim design, together with the physical separation of intake/exhaust, creates space for near-engine exhaust aftertreatment. The 48-volt on-board power supply serves not only high power consumers such as the water pump and air-conditioning compressor, but also the Integrated Starter Generator (ISG), which also supplies energy to the battery by means of highly efficient energy recuperation.
V8 biturbo with cylinder shutoff and turbochargers in the cylinder V
The new biturbo is among the world's most economical V8 petrol engines, and consumes up to six percent less fuel than its predecessor. The new V8 develops 345 kW (469 hp) and 700 Nm, and is installed in the Mercedes-Benz S 560 (combined fuel consumption: 8.5-7.9 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 195-181 g/km) and Mercedesâ€'Maybach S 560 (combined fuel consumption: 9.3-8.8 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 209-198 g/km). Both are also available with 4MATIC all-wheel drive.
Plug-in hybrid with longer range and lower fuel consumption
Thanks to the significantly increased battery capacity of 13.3 kWh, it is intended that the range for all-electric driving will increase to about 50 km. In conjunction with the new Mercedes-Benz Wallbox, the on-board 7.2-kW charger allows much faster charging of the battery.
The top-of-the-line Mercedes-Benz car engine is the V12 with 390 kW (530 hp) and 830 Nm in the Mercedes-Benz S 600 (combined fuel consumption: 11.6 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 270 g/km). The new twelve-cylinder engine in the Mercedes-Maybach S 650 has an output of 463 kW (630 hp) and a maximum torque of 1000 Nm (combined fuel consumption: 12.7 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 289 g/km).
For superior performance with significantly reduced fuel consumption, the AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine with cylinder shutoff in the Mercedes-AMG S 63 4MATIC+ replaces the previous 5.5-litre V8 biturbo. Despite its smaller displacement, the new engine develops 450 kW (612 hp) and a maximum torque of 900 Nm. (combined fuel consumption: 8.9 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 203 g/km). The Mercedes-AMG S 65 is equipped with a twelve-cylinder engine developing 463 kW (630 hp) and 1000 Nm (combined fuel consumption: 11.9 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 279 g/km).
Most powerful diesel car in Mercedes-Benz history
The new six-cylinder in-line diesel engine is being premiered in two output classes: The Mercedes-Benz S 350 d has an output of 210 kW (286 hp) and 600 Nm (combined fuel consumption: 5.1 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 134 g/km). The S 400 d with 250 kW (340 hp) and 700 Nm is the most powerful series production car diesel engine ever offered by Mercedes-Benz (combined fuel consumption: 5.2 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 135 g/km). Both variants are also available with 4MATIC all-wheel drive.
Although the output has increased noticeably compared to the preceding model, the new engine consumes up to six percent less fuel.
Nine gears for comfortable and efficient gear shifts
In all variants of the new S-Class (with the exception of the twelve-cylinder models), power is transferred by the 9Gâ€'TRONIC automatic transmission. The broad ratio spread of gears one to nine allows a clearly perceptible reduction in engine speed and is a decisive factor behind the high level of energy efficiency and ride comfort. Shortened shift and response times ensure optimum spontaneity combined with outstandingly smooth gear changes. In manual mode and the S mode in particular, the 9G-TRONIC responds significantly more spontaneously and enhances driving pleasure.
The outstanding shift comfort of the world's first nine-speed automatic transmission for premium cars with rear, all-wheel, hybrid or plug-in hybrid drive is ensured by an extensive package of measures. These include the novel direct control system which enables short, barely perceptible gear changes. The combination of twin-turbine torsional damper and centrifugal pendulum technology in the torque converter ensures outstanding drive comfort. Compact lightweight construction was another area of emphasis during development: Despite two additional gears and a maximum transferable torque of up to 1000 newton metres, the new automatic transmission requires as little installation space as its predecessor and is also lighter in weight.
48 volt system: More power, performance, flexibility, comfort and efficiency
The 48 volt on-board power network also celebrates its world premiere with the introduction of the Integrated Starter Generator in the S 450 and S 500 models of the new Mercedes-Benz Sâ€'Class. It offers four times the power of a 12 volt system at identical currents, and makes fuel savings possible.
The 48 volt system establishes a third on-board power network. It fills the gap between the 12 volt network already established for decades and the high-voltage network required by electric vehicles. The latter makes special safety precautions necessary, can therefore only be used to good effect for a small number of components and is limited to driving functions. As the power requirement increases, the limited voltage of the conventional 12 volt network leads to a constant increase in current levels, and therefore to supply lines with large cross-sections. It is however not being replaced, but rather supplemented by the 48 volt network.
The voltage is directly derived from the legally prescribed contact protection maximum of 60 volts, and can therefore be used without the precautions for a high-voltage on-board network. At the same time the voltage which is four times that of a 12 volt on-board network results in four times the output available. Thanks to the use of a lithium-ion battery, the 48 volt network allows outputs of up to 16 kW and thereby considerably extends the range of applications for electrical consumers.
The power for the 48 volt network is generated by the ISG. Located between the engine and the transmission, this electrical machine combines the functions of a starter and alternator. The conventional 12 volt network is likewise supplied from the new network using a 48 volt/12 volt DC/DC converter. As there are high demands on the 12 volt on-board network in terms of system failure, a 12 volt battery continues to be used but in a smaller version than previously. The overall on-board battery capacity is increased by the 48 volt battery, allowing more electrical energy to be provided for innovative functions when stationary, e.g. in climate control.
The innovative functions and components of the 48 volt network and the Integrated Starter Generator include:
The electrification of these assemblies and integration of the generator into the powertrain also eliminates the conventional belt drives on the front face of the engine. This not only makes the engine shorter, but also lowers the noise level while making for improved reliability.
ECO Assist: Networked drive strategy for intelligent efficiency
Predictive driving for economy: When implementing this effective efficiency strategy, the versions of the S-Class with the Integrated Starter Generator (S 450 and S 500) give the driver comprehensive support. The driver is prompted when it is appropriate to release the accelerator, for example because the S-Class is approaching a speed limit, and assisted by innovative functions such as gliding and recuperation. To this end, navigation data, traffic sign recognition and information from the intelligent safety assistants (radar and stereo camera) are networked and processed.
ECO Assist takes the following traffic situations and information into account in its driving recommendations and efficiency strategy:
ECO Assist continuously generates coasting simulations in the background: Depending on the charge level of the battery and the traffic situation, it computes whether the vehicle should ideally be allowed to coast freely ("sail") with the lowest possible driving resistance when releasing the accelerator, or whether it should be decelerated so that the battery can be efficiently charged (recuperation).
Within the limits of the system, ECO Assist regulates the impetus according to the situation as soon as the driver's foot leaves the accelerator. The driver is given a discreet prompt to do this by the appearance of a "release accelerator" symbol in the central display (or if installed, in the head-up display). At the same time a graphic gives the driver the reason for the recommendation (e.g. "Junction ahead" or "Gradient ahead").
To increase the driver's motivation to follow the recommendations of ECO Assist, the on-board computer records how many kilometres/for how much time during a journey the car has been driven with the engine switched off, and shows this in the central display. The reward not only takes the form of reduced fuel consumption, but also of an increased (all-electric) range.
ECO Assist predictively computes the driving situation when deciding whether to drive with the lowest resistances or whether to recuperate. Some examples:
In the interests of operating comfort, too many driver prompts are avoided if possible. To this end ECO Assist analyses speed limits that occur in rapid succession, and in the case of an impending limit of e.g. 70 km/h shortly followed by a built-up area, it gently regulates the speed directly down to 50 km/h when the driver responds to the "Release accelerator" prompt.
Gliding mode: driving without the combustion engine
To keep energy consumption as low as possible when gliding, not only is the powertrain decoupled, but the combustion engine is switched off as well. In drive systems with the Integrated Starter Generator, the transmission is shifted to the neutral position. Decoupling the powertrain reduces its drag losses and allows energy-efficient coasting for as long as possible.
Model range: Relaxed travel and working comfort
2013 marked the launch of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class - the most successful luxury-class series in the world. The model range has since undergone continual expansion. The Saloon portfolio alone, without the Coupé and Cabriolet, has four body variants. While the individualisation options are almost unlimited. The two equipment lines AMG Line and AMG Line Plus, as well as the Exclusive package, upgrade the exterior and interior.
Four different wheelbases from 3035 to 4418 mm make it possible to configure an Sâ€'Class meeting the customer's personal preferences and needs. There are also various seating configurations for the rear which make working particularly comfortable and relaxing a particular pleasure.
Plus there are the Mercedes-AMG models S 63 (short or long) and S 65 (long).
With the Chauffeur package the front passenger seat can be moved forward electrically by up to 77 mm. This ensures even more relaxed travel for the passenger sitting behind it. The increased legroom allows a more comfortable resting position. The Chauffeur package also includes a retractable footrest on the front passenger side (not with short wheelbase) and EASY ADJUST luxury head restraints for the driver and front passenger. The head restraint on the front passenger side can be folded down or removed.
The Executive seat on the front passenger side allows the rear seat passenger to enjoy even more relaxed long journeys. The seat can be brought into a comfortable reclined position at the touch of a button. In combination with the leg rest and footrest this produces a comfortable sleeping surface. For Mercedes-Maybach models this Executive version is also available for the rear seat on the driver's side and is part of the standard equipment.
In the Mercedes-Maybach S 600 Pullman, four passengers can be seated on opposed Pullman-style seats behind an electrically lowerable partition.
With the optional First Class Rear, the long-wheelbase S-Class models and the Mercedes-Maybach can also be converted into a mobile office with two individual seats in the rear. The First Class Rear includes a full-width business console, two 12 V sockets and temperature-controlled cupholders. On request the First Class Rear can be had with two high-quality folding tables lined with leather matching the interior colour, allowing the business console to be converted into a desk in a matter of seconds. The stowage surfaces provide space for a notebook or working documents.
AMG Line, AMG Line Plus and Exclusive package for sporty elegance
The optional equipment lines AMG Line and AMG Line Plus, as well as the Exclusive package, upgrade the exterior and interior of the S-Class (see relevant chapters for equipment details of the Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes-Maybach models).
The exterior features of AMG Line are AMG bodystyling (consisting of front and rear aprons plus side sill panels with inserts in the vehicle colour), 48.3 cm (19-inch) AMG 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels, flared wheel arches, perforated brake discs all-round and front and rear brake callipers with "Mercedes-Benz" lettering.

ENERGIZING comfort control: Wellness while driving
ENERGIZING comfort control is a world first entering series production from September 2017: This optional feature links various comfort systems in the vehicle together. It systematically uses the functions of the climate control system (including fragrancing) and the seats (heater, ventilation, massage), the wall heating as well as lighting and musical atmospheres, and enables a specific wellness set-up tailored to the mood and need of the customer. This enhances physical comfort and performance while driving and during a break.
At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) show in January 2017, the company presented the concept car "Fit & Healthy" as a vision of how society's increasing health consciousness can be intelligently combined with future mobility. Just a few months later, ENERGIZING comfort control in the S-Class is being launched onto the market as a world first: with the help of networked comfort systems, the vehicle is able to enhance the well-being and performance of its occupants. Rather than just sporadically using a few (favourite) systems, customers with ENERGIZING comfort control are able to benefit even more from the multi-faceted comfort features in their S-Class.
The light stages the interior like a work of art by composing colour worlds from different colours (more about this in the next chapter).
ENERGIZING comfort control is available from September 2017 in combination with the AIR BALANCE package and extended ambience lighting. ENERGIZING comfort can be experienced on all seats, depending on the equipment level.
Extended ambience lighting: Avant-garde lighting scene with spectacular colour changes
The extended ambience lighting creates interior lighting moods like a work of art by composing colour worlds from different colours. This creates emotive contrasts and structures the interior into levels. 64 colours, ten colour worlds and three different lighting zones (footwells, trim element level and Widescreen Cockpit) allow an avant-garde lighting scene with spectacular colour changes.
A colour world is assigned to each of the display styles of the Widescreen Cockpit: "Glacier Blue" for the classic display style, "Red Moon" for the sporty style and "Down Blue" for the progressive style. Eight colour worlds each consist of two colours, with the Widescreen Cockpit and footwells in the same colour while the trim element level is colour-contrasted. This colour distribution changes in the sporty mode. Two further colour worlds even group five colours (two of them visible) together - these slowly replace each other to create a continuous colour change in the interior.
The colour worlds can be temporarily replaced with special effects - for example, a special lighting atmosphere welcomes the driver. In addition, the climate control system indicates whether the temperature is adjusted up or down through the colour of the ambience lighting. The brightness of the LEDs adapts equally variably and can be set in five levels and four zones: Widescreen Cockpit, front seat area, rear and overall dimming zone. As a result, the ambience lighting harnesses the positive effects of light on well-being while on the road. This makes this equipment feature a key part of ENERGIZING comfort control with its tailor-made programmes.
Anti-allergy interior: The S-Class is particularly kind to allergy sufferers
Like all Mercedes-Benz model series, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class carries the seal of the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation (ECARF). The seal confirms that the values measured inside the vehicle meet the Foundation's stringent requirements, and that this has been confirmed in tests. A new testing procedure developed by Mercedes-Benz, for which a patent application has been filed, has shown that even the minutest of allergenic particles are trapped by the activated charcoal filter in the vehicle.
Allergies are now the most common form of chronic illness in industrialised countries. In Europe, around 30 percent of the population are affected. Not only airborne pollen from spring until autumn, but also emissions given off by materials, or skin contact with them, can lead to a strong immune reaction with symptoms such as swelling of the nasal passages and bronchial tubes or swollen, itching eyes.
Motorists with allergies can breathe a sigh of relief in a Mercedes-Benz car, as numerous interior components are tested for inhalation allergens before the vehicle goes into production. In addition, the pollen filter is tested for correct functioning in both the new and used condition.
Patent pending: Mercedes-Benz laboratory testing procedure
"For many years, we have been testing the efficiency of filters in air conditioners," explains Dr Andreas Wiegers, Design for Environment, Interior Emissions at Mercedes-Benz. "We design these filters so that, whether in fresh-air or air-recirculation mode, they allow virtually no particulate matter or pollen into the interior of the vehicle. The anti-allergenic effect of our filters in relation to pollen was scientifically confirmed many years ago. Unfortunately, it was previously impossible to measure especially small allergenic particles." The minutest particles include fragmented birch pollen, cat hair allergens and moulds. These are up to 1 µm in size, i.e. 50 to 100 times thinner than a human hair.
The experts at Mercedes-Benz therefore developed a sophisticated laboratory testing procedure, for which a patent application has been filed. The procedure uses a filtration apparatus with a vacuum suction flask. Small test particles are sucked into a flask through a tube. The flask contains a filter medium - an approx. 5 cm circular piece from the air conditioner filter. The solution is collected in a test tube at the bottom of the suction flask.
The efficiency of the filter is measured by means of a before/after comparison, with the concentration of allergens before and after the filter being determined. In tests with fungus spores, the Mercedes-Benz researchers formed a dilution series and counted the number of spores in a Petri dish. In the case of cat fur epitheliums and fine particles, the concentration of allergens was determined as the average outgoing quality in the ELISA test (Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay). Depending on the concentration of allergens, the colour reaction of a liquid differs in intensity.
The outcome of the sophisticated laboratory tests is that the fine particle filter in Mercedes-Benz vehicles traps even the minutest of allergenic particles. The activated charcoal fine particle filter (standard in the S-Class, optionally available in many model series) offers optimal filtering of the outside and inside air; the activated charcoal also keeps odours out of the interior.
A medical study conducted by ECARF Institute GmbH with asthmatics as test subjects has confirmed the anti-allergenic effect of the filters. The tests were carried out using a section of the air conditioner from the current S-Class in the mobile pollen chamber in the grounds of the Charité university hospital in Berlin.
Infotainment system: Connected on every seat
All Mercedes-Benz S-Class models are equipped with the latest-generation infotainment system COMAND Online, starting a new era in digitisation and connectivity.
LINGUATRONIC voice control has for the first time been extended to include vehicle functions. Voice commands can now also be used to control the air conditioning and seat heating/ventilation, interior lighting (ambience lighting, reading lights, lighting in the rear), fragrancing/ionisation, seat massage function and head-up display. Depending on the language version and equipment level, up to 450 individual voice commands are now possible - among them e.g. commands such as "Ambience lighting violet" or "Fragrancing medium level". If the voice command is spoken without the addition of "front passenger", it refers only to the driver's side.
Also new with LINGUATRONIC 2.0: The driver is able to request a wealth of information - e.g. the next service date, the current speed limit, the remaining range or the date.
Another new feature lends a friendly, almost human touch to the voice control system of Mercedes-Benz. Initially only in the German and English versions, LINGUATRONIC uses so-called "Varying Voice Prompts". by virtue of which the system no longer responds to commands with the same acknowledgement each time, but rather with a variation and uses up to four sentences with a similar meaning.
Individual Rear Entertainment: personal entertainment programme
Films on Blu-ray or DVD, TV, internet, video games, music - Individual Rear Entertainment gives passengers in the rear a completely personal entertainment programme. In combination with high-quality RF headphones (optional), two 25.9 cm (10.2-inch) displays on the front seat backrests ensure brilliant video and audio quality. The system is conveniently controlled via the COMAND remote control. It includes a Blu-ray player, is networked with COMAND Online and has connections for external devices. This means that passengers are independently able to access the entertainment source of their choice. The content of MP3 players, game consoles, USB sticks, iPods® or iPads® is also available via connections in the rear armrest.
The "COMAND Touch" app has been extended in terms of its functions, especially in the ace of the Rear Seat Entertainment, allowing access via smartphone to various vehicle functions. A new feature is that passengers in the rear can now study the planned route during the journey and send points of interest along the route to the head unit for the driver. This also works when the passengers are not online, since the maps can be downloaded in advance for offline use. The "COMAND Touch" app is available free of charge from the Apple™ App Store and Google Play Store.
Free web browsing is possible when the vehicle is stationary, thanks to the integrated SIM card in the communications module. A separate data contract is required for this. With COMAND Online, Mercedes-Benz apps can also be used while driving.
The Burmester® High-End 3D Surround Sound system with a system output of 1520 watts was expanded with a speaker in the overhead control panel and two speakers in the sides.
Navigation: Up-to-date traffic reports thanks to Live Traffic Information
COMAND Online offers fast 3D hard-drive navigation with topographical map display, photo-realistic 3D buildings and 3D map rotations. The system presents its content interactively and includes features such as an animated compass.
Comprehensive information is displayed on the navigation map: in addition to real-time traffic density information it can e.g. include Car-to-X warning messages, the weather, filling stations including current fuel prices and free parking spaces.
Live Traffic Information allows the reception of precise traffic information which is updated by the system every two minutes. Taking the current vehicle location into account when requesting traffic information also ensures that the enquiring vehicles receive all the traffic information of relevance to them. The received traffic information is based on so-called "Floating Car Data", the key technology for precise acquisition of traffic data.
Smartphone: wireless charging and extended messaging
The features relating to smartphone connectivity have also been expanded: With the Smartphone Integration package, Apple's smartphone-based infotainment system CarPlay™ and Google's Android Auto can be used. If a corresponding smartphone is connected by USB, the customer can, if desired, switch to the CarPlay™ or Android Auto interface.
With the help of Near Field Communication, the smartphone transforms into the digital vehicle key and the controller for parking.
Mobile phones can be charged as standard, wirelessly and without a telephone holder. Wireless charging works with all mobile devices that support or can be retrofitted to support the Qi standard. The charging pad is integrated into the stowage compartment at the front of the centre console. Wireless charging is optionally also available in the centre console in the rear. In addition, Multifunction Telephony (optional feature) allows connecting mobile phones with the vehicle's exterior aerial.
Concierge service: personal support
Even the Mercedes me connect Standard Services make life for Mercedes-Benz drivers easier all-round - for example, vehicle diagnostics in the event of a break down or an accident. The Mercedes me services "Vehicle Set-Up" and "Vehicle Monitoring" allow drivers to connect to their vehicle from anywhere and at any time, to access vehicle information and to remotely activate a variety of functions. The range of functions includes Vehicle Tracker, Remote Door Locking and Unlocking, and Programming of Auxiliary Heating. This works both with the Mercedes me app (available for iOS and Android) and via the Mercedes me Portal (www.mercedes.me).
And the new Concierge Service gives participating customers a wealth of personalised assistance: from making restaurant reservations and obtaining tips about tourist routes, to gathering information on cultural or sporting events and sending navigation destinations directly to the vehicle.
Access is straightforward: registered Mercedes me connect users can establish a telephone connection with the Concierge Service in a preset language in 19 countries across Europe using either the iCall button in the overhead control panel or the Mercedes me app. The personal concierge takes care of everything else.
MULTIBEAM LED with ULTRA RANGE high beams: Light, as bright as the law allows
In 2013, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class became the first automobile to use exclusively LEDs as light sources. On request, the optional MULTIBEAM LED headlamps are available with ULTRA RANGE high beams.
Extremely quick and precise adjustment of the headlamps to the current traffic conditions comes courtesy of MULTIBEAM LED. Via 84 individually controllable LEDs, the light is always switched on exactly where it is needed. 100 times per second, a total of four control units calculate the ideal lighting using information from the camera behind the windscreen as well as from the navigation system. The innovative technology extends and perfects the already familiar functions.
In main beam mode, Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus allows permanent long-range road illumination without dazzle. If no other road user is detected, the road ahead is straight and the vehicle speed is above 40 km/h, the supplementary ULTRA RANGE high beams are automatically switched on. This produces the maximum light intensity permitted by law, which results in the brightness of the main beam headlamps only falling below the reference value of 1 lux after a distance of more than 650 metres. If the system recognises other road users or highly reflective traffic signs, the ULTRA RANGE high beams are automatically switched off and partial high beam is activated. The ULTRA RANGE high beams are only always active if high beam mode has been manually switched on.
The other functions of MULTIBEAM LED:
When there are oncoming vehicles or vehicles ahead, the LEDs of the main beam modules are partially switched off, masking out a U-shaped area of the light beam. The other areas of the road continue to be illuminated with the high beam (partial high beam). When a motorway situation is recognised, the high beams are adjusted for optimum light distribution. Motorway high beam reduces the risk of dazzling oncoming truck drivers, and focusses the attention of truck drivers on the road ahead. Depending on the traffic situation, motorway partial high beam is activated to avoid dazzling other road users by specifically masking out areas of light.
Additionally available with MULTIBEAM LED is Night View Assist Plus. In the dark this enables the driver to recognise pedestrians and larger animals at an earlier stage with the help of infra-red light and a thermal imaging camera. The instrument display automatically switches over to a brilliant night vision image, highlighting sources of danger to make them clearly visible. In addition a spotlight function can be used to flash a light at them. This attracts the driver's attention to the danger, and the person at the road edge is warned at the same time.
Body, aerodynamics and passive safety: Aluminium hybrid bodyshell with high crash safety
High crash safety, lightweight construction, outstanding rigidity for superb driving performance while ensuring quiet-running and vibration comfort - these are the hallmarks of the S-Class bodyshell. The lightweight construction quality of the aluminium hybrid bodyshell - the torsional rigidity in relation to weight and vehicle dimensions - sets standards.
The bodyshell structure of the S-Class achieves top marks for dynamic rigidity thanks to its structural concepts and special NVH measures for the bodyshell. These include:
The proportion of aluminium exceeds 50 percent. The entire outer skin of the S-Class, including the roof and the front end of the body, is made of aluminium. In addition, structural foam is used acting at certain nodal points. The safety passenger cell uses an extremely high percentage of high-strength steel.
This lightweight design by material and geometrical optimisation, coupled with highly complex joining technology, allows the new S-Class to further raise the bar in the demanding luxury saloon segment - without adding weight. With a torsional rigidity of 40.5 kNm/degree, the S-Class achieves a new record in its segment.
Combination: sophisticated joining techniques for steel and aluminium
The area of the firewall is of sheet steel construction. In addition to optimally meeting the functional requirements, it was possible to integrate the sophisticated hybrid joint between the aluminium front section and the steel passenger cell. The aluminium hybrid construction led to additional mechanical joining techniques. These made it possible to e.g. join high-strength sheet steel and aluminium, and to reduce the sheet thicknesses of the components.
As well as the front section, the integral carriers are of aluminium and have the lowest weight in their class. The integral carriers have numerous functions: as their name implies, they are the carriers for a large number of major assemblies. In addition the integral carrier is a central component in the front end structure to meet crash and NVH requirements. The side members of the integral carrier also form the third impact energy dissipation path in the front section. To meet these varied requirements while keeping the weight low, it was necessary to realise a complex aluminium hybrid construction of diecast/chill cast sections, extruded sections and sheet steel.
One of the special lightweight construction methods was the use of structural foam sections at functionally critical nodal points to achieve a high NVH performance. The working principle of these foam sections makes it possible to position them in exactly the right places. This is because production engineering considerations, e.g. limitations on joining techniques or the component joining sequence, do not need to be taken into account. Moreover, cross-sections with several chambers can be permanently connected.
Safety first: passenger cell of high-strength steel alloys
The safety passenger cell consists primarily of steel. Ultra high-strength, hot-formed steel alloys which are weight-optimised as tailored products with different sheet thicknesses are used in the areas of the B-pillars, roof frame and tunnel reinforcement. In the lower side member area, an ultra high-strength steel (CP 1000) is used as a roll-profiled component. This material-based lightweight construction is also supported by lightweight structures. These include e.g. the permanent joint between the C-pillar and the rear centre section, which efficiently supports the rear side members during deformation of the rear end.
Restraint systems: optimisation of every detail
Maximum occupant protection is assured not only by the exemplary crash behaviour of the bodyshell, but also by the state-of-the-art restraint systems and the PRE-SAFE® system.
As standard, in addition to reversible electronic belt tensioners, driver and front passenger seats are also fitted with PRE-SAFE® Impulse. This is a three-point seat belt with innovative pyrotechnic three-way tensioning and special belt force limiter system. Three-point seat belts with inertia-reel tensioners and self-adaptive belt force limiters are fitted for the rear passengers in the two outer seats. The centre seat is fitted with a conventional three-point seat belt. As optional extras, seat belt buckle extenders with PRE-SAFE® function, beltbag, sidebag in the rear and cushionbag are available to enhance the level of safety in the rear seats even further.
Driver and front passenger airbags: adaptive inflation
The driver airbag (volume approx. 64 litres) is equipped with a two-stage gas generator. Two inflation stages can be activated depending on the severity of the accident, the second stage being triggered after a slight delay. As a special feature in addition to the two-stage gas generator, the front passenger airbag (volume approx. 112 litres) has a pyrotechnically activated adaptation stage: The damping effect when the occupant is immersed in the airbag is stronger or weaker as required, depending on seating position and level of inflation.
The thorax-pelvis sidebags for the driver and front passenger have an inflated volume of around 17 litres and are integrated into the front seat backrests. The sidebags in the rear with a volume of around 12 litres are integrated into the bodyshell in the area of the rear interior side panels. The windowbag case (volume approx. 40 litres) is inflated by a gas generator located in the roof area behind the B-pillar in the event of a crash.
Aerodynamics: still the leader
For three decades now, the aerodynamic specialists at Mercedes-Benz have been breaking one record after another. In practically all vehicle segments, the brand's models have meanwhile achieved the leading position for aerodynamics. The new S-Class also leads its segment in terms of aerodynamics and aeroacoustics. The drag coefficient (Cd = 0.24) of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class sets a new standard in this segment.
A number of aerodynamic measures, both major and minor, are responsible for this result:
Aeroacoustics: scarcely perceptible noise level in the interior
The aeroacoustic specialists also took measures to counter wind noise during the aerodynamic development work. The sealing system for the windows and door handles makes a key contribution to reducing high-frequency wind noise. In addition, the exterior mirrors and correspondingly designed A-pillars with a minimised upstand for the carefully directed drainage of dirty water impacting the windscreen prevent the airflow from separating at these points, and therefore noises that might penetrate into the interior via the windscreen and side windows. In addition to reducing the sound pressure level, the focus of the acoustic development work was on achieving the well-balanced and pleasant overall impression that is a hallmark of the S-Class.
Chassis: The first suspension system with "eyes" now sees even better
In 2013 the Mercedes-Benz S-Class made a technological statement of superiority with ROAD SURFACE SCAN. The system recognises road bumps in advance and compensates them. In the new S-Class this suspension control is further improved: The system's new stereo camera has a much better performance and works at speeds up to 180 km/h.
The S-Class Saloon's curve inclination function is another comfort enhancement available for the first time. The body tilts to the inside of the bend by up to 2.65 degrees, thereby reducing the lateral forces acting on the passengers.
Comfortable, sporty, efficient or individual handling characteristics can be selected at the touch of a button in the centre console with DYNAMIC SELECT. This modifies parameters such as the characteristics of the engine, transmission, suspension and steering according to the driving mode selected.
The default setting is the well-balanced and fuel-efficient "Comfort" mode. More agility and dynamism is provided by "Sport" driving mode, with more progressive steering characteristics, a sporty, taut suspension setup, fast throttle response and modified shift points. This further increases the car's sportiness. The suspension and powertrain have a more dynamic setup.
The "Eco" driving programme is designed to keep fuel consumption to a minimum. It includes modified accelerator characteristics, shift points and suspension setup. Depending on the model, the gliding function and recuperation are also controlled (see "Under the microscope: ECO Assist").
"Individual" mode allows the driver to vary the individual parameters - from the steering and powertrain to the suspension.
AIRMATIC: enhanced comfort and driving dynamics
The standard-fit full air suspension system AIRMATIC with continuously adaptive damping control allows the spring travel to be maintained whatever the vehicle load, by means of continuous level adjustment. Depending on speed, the vehicle level is automatically regulated and lowered by up to 20 mm when driving at over 120 km/h. Aerodynamic drag is reduced, and handling stability is improved by the car's low centre of gravity. The driver is able to select a 40 mm higher vehicle level if the road surface is poor, or, for example, when negotiating a tricky garage entrance.
The fully automatic adaptive damping system included as standard adjusts the damping at each wheel to the current requirements. The single-tube dampers have two valves for the rebound and compression stages. The ideal operating point can be selected at all times on the basis of a broad scope of information relating to acceleration, vehicle level or vehicle speed, for example.
MAGIC BODY CONTROL: the world's first suspension system with "eyes"
The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class is even better able to recognise road bumps in advance. The MAGIC BODY CONTROL suspension system optionally available for the eight-cylinder models comprises ACTIVE Body Control, ROAD SURFACE SCAN and, for the first time in the Saloon, the curve inclination function.
The "eyes" for the ROAD SURFACE SCAN function are provided by a stereo camera fitted behind the windscreen, which scans the road up to 15 metres ahead of the vehicle and delivers a precise image of the road contours. Based on the camera pictures and driving status information, the control unit constantly calculates the best control strategy for overcoming unevenness such as prolonged bumps.
This means that the vehicle can make the right force available in advance, and for each individual wheel. The suspension is adapted to the relevant situation within fractions of a second, enabling body movements to be considerably reduced. The result is unprecedented ride comfort. As ROAD SURFACE SCAN makes use of an improved stereo camera, it now also works in subdued light and at speeds up to 180 km/h.
In the Active Body Control system of Mercedes-Benz, the four suspension struts are fitted with hydraulic cylinders (so-called plungers) in order to adjust the force in each strut individually. This means that the system can almost completely compensate for lifting, rolling and pitching movements of the body. The control unit receives information on the current driving situation from various acceleration sensors and then compares these data with those from the pressure sensors in the spring struts and the level sensors on the control arms. The system then computes the control signals for the servo-hydraulic valves at the front and rear axle to ensure precisely metered oil flows.
Once oil flows into the plunger cylinders, this modifies the tracing point of the steel springs integrated into the spring struts, generating the necessary force to counteract the body movements. Thanks to a constantly available hydraulic pressure of up to 200 bar, ACTIVE BODY CONTROL is able to stabilise the body within fractions of a second.
Curve tilting function: available in the S-Class Saloon for the first time
Adjustment of the suspension strut base points is also used for the curve inclination function, which is available in the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Saloon for the first time. The vehicle leans into bends in a similar way to motorcyclists or skiers. The lateral acceleration acting upon occupants is reduced in a way akin to driving on a banked curve, and passengers sit more firmly. On country roads in particular, the new curve tilting function heightens motoring enjoyment and comfort. The aim is not to achieve higher cornering speeds, but a new driving experience: The S-Class glides elegantly through bends.
With the curve tilting function, the base points of the steel springs integrated into the ABC suspension struts are raised by plunger cylinders on one side of the vehicle, and lowered on the other, depending on the bend being negotiated. This allows the vehicle to incline automatically and continuously in fractions of a second on bends - depending on the road angle and vehicle speed. The effect is felt much more, since the vehicle would normally tilt outwards.
This innovative system recognises bends with the help of a stereo camera behind the windscreen, and of the lateral acceleration sensor of the ACTIVE BODY CONTROL suspension. The curve inclination function is activated together with ROAD SURFACE SCAN in the "Comfort" setting of Dynamic Select, and can be separately selected in the "Individual" setting.
